Aw..what a pisser. Have a phone interview with someone that goes well and then learn the wage is bottom barrel. The guy wanted to meet for a face to face. After wrestling with it back n'forth all weekend, D & I decided that there is no point in taking a job (any job) if your intention is to leave when something better comes along.
Today I spent an hour writing a 5 sentence email to send to the guy. I want to keep the door open as I enjoyed my rapport with him.
As you know from our phone interview, I am very interested in the role. It is a shame I am not able to pursue this opportunity any further, but the salary is lower than I had expected. Should the remuneration situation ever change I would welcome the chance to discuss being part of the accounting team. I hope the future brings us the opportunity to talk again.
Finally its done and I send it off. And what happens? He replies, thanking me for my honesty, telling me he liked my personality and wished that we could have met.
